Why Oppidan Camps?

An Oppidan Camp is a unique experience for a child. It incorporates five days of interactive workshops, guest speakers, outdoor sports and team games, as well as cooking, camping and a host of practical skills. Children are treated like adults and come away with an increased sense of confidence about themselves and their education. Having people who make it their priority to nurture children and keep them grounded is of huge value in an increasingly uncertain world for the younger generation.

Our Ethos

Oppidan Camps has taken the US camp model and brought it to the U.K. A modern-day Swallows and Amazons with a strict no-tech rule, the camps manifest experience over acquisition: an innocent, nostalgic enjoyment of the outdoors. Camps give children the independence they need to be totally free, to meet new friends and to return to school with a sense of renewed energy for their studies.

The Oppidan Story

Blue horizontal.png

Henry Faber and Walter Kerr set-up Oppidan Education in 2016 to tackle the pressurised, anxiety-driven education market in London. The result has been the creation and expansion of the concept of mentoring as the new, improved form of support for children.

On the back of Oppidan Education’s one-on-one mentoring business, Henry and Walter bought two bell tents and set up camp: Oppidan Camps was born. Three years later, you can find us at Woodhall Estate, Hertfordshire, where we run camps for both independent families and school groups, both in and out of term time.

The camp delivers real value for money and offers nothing I've ever come across before. The staff and structure of the activities are first class.

Oppidan Parent

Mother of 11-year-old girl

Dylan absolutely loved it and said it was the best camp he’s been on. As parents we loved the daily updates, felt connected but not intrusive on the children’s time and were extremely pleased that it was tech-free.

Amazing team leaders, beautifully organised, delicious food and very well judged activities.
